SYNOPSIS
Daimon Michiko is a brilliant surgeon who works freelance. Michiko is averse to social relationships, authority, and constraints. She has a detailed employment contract where it is stated that she will not do any work that does not require a medical license, she will only work for eight hours from 8am to 5pm, and she will receive extra payment if she is required to work outside her normal work hours.
The reputation of Totei University Hospital has suffered greatly due to various scandals, from medical malpractices to corruption. Shimura Madoka is appointed as the new director, and she is tasked to restore the organization's honor and integrity.
REVIEW
I really like Doctor X ~ Gekai Daimon Michiko ~ because it is one of those dramas that made me think twice about a lot of things; from doctors and hospitals to relationships and societal norms. It has definitely challenged my assumptions about doctors and hospitals.
Doctor X 5 ~ Gekai Daimon Michiko ~ highlights the double standards between men and women in most professions in general and in the medical profession in particular. It just seems that the bar is set higher for women, and they are expected to be more and to do more just to be on the same level with men.
Male doctors can rise up the ranks even though they are not exceptionally skilled or especially talented. Male doctors can also be morally corrupt in terms of having mistresses or taking bribes, and it doesn't affect their promotions to higher positions within the organization.
Female doctors like Shimura Madoka had to have an impeccable personal life and professional career so she can go up the organization's so-called corporate ladder. When it was revealed that she's a mistress of a celebrity, this misconduct thoroughly damaged her image and destroyed the professional career that she had been building all throughout her working life.
I thought it was frustrating that she's being held to higher standards for the same position compared to the other male doctors. I wouldn't have an issue if both male doctors and female doctors suffer about the same consequences for similar transgressions.
