SYNOPSIS
Daimon Michiko is a brilliant surgeon who works freelance. Michiko is averse to social relationships, authority, and constraints. She has a detailed employment contract where it is stated that she will not do any work that does not require a medical license, she will only work for eight hours from 8am to 5pm, and she will receive extra payment if she is required to work outside her normal work hours.
Michiko is in Kanazawa City and while she's looking for the so-called best sushi restaurant in the world, she sees a woman collapse on the street. Michiko performs first-aid and calls an ambulance to bring the woman to the nearest hospital.
Kurosu Medical Center is the first drug development hospital in Japan and it has been designated as a special modern medical zone. When the hospital director Kurosu Kantaro sees Michiko perform emergency surgery, he enlists her services to perform surgery on the national figure skater and local star Himura Kojiro.
REVIEW
I really like Doctor X ~ Gekai Daimon Michiko ~ because it is one of those dramas that made me think twice about a lot of things; from doctors and hospitals to relationships and societal norms. It has definitely challenged my assumptions about doctors and hospitals.
The drama is about how Daimon Michiko had injured her dominant hand prior to a very much publicized surgery on a high profile patient, and how she had to deal with her worries that her right hand won't heal properly and how she is afraid that she's no longer as great a surgeon as she used to be before the incident.
Michiko got hurt because someone purposely wanted to hurt her, which makes sense because surgery is Michiko's life and she wouldn't really be careless with her hands that she uses to perform surgery.
Doctor X ~ Gekai Daimon Michiko ~ talks about how painful and frustrating it is when a person can no longer do whatever it is they are passionate about, whether it is being a surgeon or doing figure skating, because of unfortunate circumstances. According to Kanbara Akira, for some people, not being able to do your passion is the same as losing your life.
