SYNOPSIS
Daimon Michiko is a brilliant surgeon who works freelance. Michiko is averse to social relationships, authority, and constraints. She has a detailed employment contract where it is stated that she will not do any work that does not require a medical license, she will only work for eight hours from 8am to 5pm, and she will receive extra payment if she is required to work outside  her normal work hours.

REVIEW
I like Doctor X ~ Gekai Daimon Michiko ~ because it is one of those dramas that made me think twice about a lot of things; from doctors and hospitals to relationships and societal norms. It has definitely challenged my assumptions about doctors and hospitals.

I had always assumed that hospitals are accessible 24/7. I mean, I know hospitals have specific visiting hours but I had always assumed that hospitals have emergency rooms were people can seek medical care anytime of the day and everyday throughout the year. It was really surprising for me to find that the hospital where Daimon Michiko is working part-time remains closed to everyone until the designated opening time even though it is obvious that some people lining up and waiting are in an emergency medical situation.

In most fields, the highly decorated individuals and the ones with the most experience are considered the best in the field. It was enlightening to find out that this is not always the case in the field of medicine.

In the drama, the professors may be good at doing research and analysis but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are good at doing surgery or treating patients. Also in the drama, the hospital directors may be good at managing hospitals but they may be out of their element in the operating room where they may not have been able to keep up with current medical and technological advancement.

Of course, this does not mean that the interns and young doctors are any better because they lack the necessary experience. The young doctors are basically doing the 'practice makes perfect' routine while on the job, which is ordinary in the field of medicine but this knowledge is quite nerve-wracking especially for their first patients, naturally.

It is also quite interesting to note that sometimes what we think of other people is not so much a reflection of who they really are but more likely a reflection of who we really are.

In the drama, a secretary assumes that Michiko gets her luxury bags by asking a man to buy it for her but the secretary is actually the mistress of a doctor and she is the one who asks men to buy her expensive bags. Also in the drama, a doctor accuses Michiko of being primarily concerned with money but he is the one who is actually obsessed with money.

Michiko takes the extreme opposite way of how the society normally acts or reacts. There are times that I completely agree with her but then there are also times when I think she is being ridiculous and unreasonable.

Jonōchi Hiromi: ... But at a university hospital, there are not-so-competent and weak doctors too. We all covered for each other and somehow managed to keep it running. Until you came.
Daimon Michiko: But that's not right, is it?
Jonōchi Hiromi: But that's what an organization is.
Daimon Michiko: Out of 100 doctors, you have 10 good ones. If those 10 doctors covered for the rest, mistakes are bound to occur and they'll eventually die of exhaustion. Should you be helping incompetent doctors? Doctors are supposed to help patients.
Jonōchi Hiromi: But still, not everyone can live as they please like you.
Daimon Michiko: Why not? Can you entrust your precious life to a university hospital like this? In the operating room, you don't need cozy ties or cooperation or formality. All you have is a patient who needs to be saved.
Jonōchi Hiromi: Not all doctors have confidence like you.
Daimon Michiko: I don't have confidence. I do have a weapon, though. The pressure that I can't fail is my weapon.
