SYNOPSIS
Daimon Michiko is a skilled surgeon who works freelance. Michiko is averse to social relationships, authority, and constraints. She has a detailed employment contract where it is stated that she will not do any work that does not require a medical license, she will only work for eight hours from 8am to 5pm, and she will receive extra payment if she is required to work outside her normal work hours.
A large university hospital hires Michiko's services to operate on a VIP patient. The patient's identity remains unknown to Michiko and for the first time, she has not examined her patient before the scheduled operation.
REVIEW
I really like Doctor X ~ Gekai Daimon Michiko ~ because it is one of those dramas that made me think twice about a lot of things; from doctors and hospitals to relationships and societal norms. It has definitely challenged my assumptions about doctors and hospitals.
I thought this sequel will just present more medical cases similar to the ones presented in ドクターX~外科医・大門未知子~ Doctor X ~ Gekai Daimon Michiko ~ and I don't really mind because I liked the prequel, but I am pleasantly surprised that the stakes are higher and Daimon Michiko's situation is more complicated this time around.
In the previous drama, the doctors only gave Michiko a hard time for being different. In this production, some doctors are using Michiko and manipulating her to serve their own selfish agendas.
Michiko always intends to save her patients by any means possible, and some doctors have realized that they can use her and her good intentions in order to further their own careers. One doctor assigns her as the fourth assistant in a major operation and then leave her to do the complicated surgery on her own. Another doctor steals her ideas on how to treat two patients with different medical conditions who are related to each other and then relies on her to do both operations.
I'm curious why Michiko always declares that she never fails or makes mistakes. Where does she get the courage to make such a definitive statement? What happens if she ever 'fails' sometime? I also wonder what she considers as failure in this context.
Daimon Michiko: Even if (your surgery was perfect), it is meaningless if the patient is not cured. I'm saying that's why you failed.
-- S02E05
I still think it's preposterous for her to say that she never fails because she doesn't really know what will happen in the future. But I think it's nice that for her, success means she helps cure the patient, and failure means she was not able to do or she did not do what she could do to cure a patient.
