SYNOPSIS
This drama is about teachers at different crucial times in history.
未来 Mirai (Future)
Shirahama Shohei worked as a teacher at a junior high school during the war in 1944. Shohei taught his students that Japan has no future unless it wins the war, and he related the importance of citizens fighting and dying for their country.
Shohei comes back to the Japan after three years, and he is recruited to teach social studies to junior high school students. Devastated by the effects of his words on his former students, Shohei is skeptical whether is really qualified to become a teacher.
生きろ Ikiro (Live) (Survive)
Goto Akira was one of Shirahama Shohei's students after Shohei came back from the war. Akira grew up to become a teacher like Shohei, who influenced him to study when he was a young orphan who had to work in an iron factory to survive.
In 1980, Akira's old junior high school was in danger of closing down because of school violence. He went back to his alma mater as a science teacher and a guidance counselor who would deal with the troubled children.
夢 Yume (Dream)
Yokote Ryoko was Goto Akira's colleague in the 1980s. She became a teacher because she wanted to give children hope, which she thinks is what children nowadays need the most. In 2011, Ryoko is now the school principal.
Takizawa Momoko is currently an English teacher at the junior high school. Although she is earnest in teaching her students, her efforts seem to be in vain as her students are not willing to listen to her lectures.
REVIEW
Blackboard 〜 Jidai o Tatakatta Kyōshi-tachi 〜 poses a very interesting question during its opening scene: Deep within your heart, is there a teacher that you will never forget?
I think being a teacher is a very noble profession, because teachers are responsible for the future generations. Being a teacher is a calling, and I think it takes a lot of courage to dedicate one's life to education.
Shirahama Masa: You're father always said, "The word 'teacher' carries the meaning 'a person who is born earlier', as is written in the dictionary. But for me, it is 'a person who shows the way to live in advance'. A person who nurtures others."
Many people see their teachers as the most influential people in their lives; discovering their talents, encouraging them to pursue certain careers, and teaching them many important lessons in life.
Goto Akira: If you try to rationalize why you'll never get anywhere. Whatever the reason, students should be taught that wrong is wrong.
Takizawa Momoko: (The future) is something you create yourself.
I remember many teachers for many different reasons; for instance, I remember the teacher who recognized my talent in writing and encouraged me to be part of the school newspaper. But I don't really have a single teacher who I remember as making a great impact in my life. Or maybe, I just forgot.
Anyway, the drama's episodes was set in different time periods and the focus was on different characters, but the transition from one episode to the next was well executed. I like how a side character from one episode became the central character in the next episode.
