SYNOPSIS
Detective Kusanagi Shunpei is assigned to a mysterious case where the victim was killed in a locked room. Shunpei approaches his old college friend Yukawa Manabu for help in solving the case.
Three years ago, Kusanagi Shunpei was a college student who works part-time as a pizza delivery guy. He was accused as a suspect in a murder case and he approaches the smartest person he knows, physics student Yukawa Manabu, to help him prove his innocence.
REVIEW
Galileo is an interesting drama because it uses science, particularly physics, to explain how crimes happen. Brilliant physicist Yukawa Manabu, also known as Galileo, helps detectives by coming up with ideas on how a crime may have occurred and then conducting experiments to prove the hypotheses.
Galileo is such a strange fellow. Other people catch his attention when they say, "it is impossible (for such an incident to occur)" and he always responds, "every phenomenon has a cause". He always says "amusing" if he gets any new information, particularly if he finds said information interesting, and when someone asks him a question that he cannot answer, he laughs maniacally while saying, "I absolutely have no idea."
Galileo 0 is a somewhat confusing production because it tackles two different cases: one case in the drama's current time frame and another case that occurred when the lead characters Kusanagi Shunpei and Galileo were still college students. If you're trying to assess where this particular drama fits in the Galileo series, this production is set three years before ガリレオ Galileo.
I think it's great that this drama focused on the friendship between Shunpei and Galileo. I liked that I found out how Shunpei knew Galileo, because it was Shunpei who introduced his junior Utsumi Kaoru to Galileo.
Anyway, the locked room murder mystery is quite interesting because there's the question of how the suspect got inside the locked room, killed the victim, and left the room still locked from the inside. If ever the suspect did not even step inside the locked room, there's still the question of how he killed the victim.
Manabu's student Shionoya Akari's side story was also fascinating. She's great in science but she wondered what kind of work she will do after she graduates from college. Akari followed her professor as he helps out with the police investigation, and she realized that she wants to work as a police detective so she can use her knowledge in science to conduct investigations and solve cases.
