REVIEW
シャボン Sabão - たからもの Takara Mono (Treasure)I have already stated in past reviews of similar productions (the earlier Japanese adaptation イタズラなKiss (Itazura na Kiss), the Taiwanese adaptation 惡作劇之吻 It Started With A Kiss, and the Korean adaptation 장난스런 키스 Playful Kiss) that I really don't like the premise of Itazura na Kiss. In a nutshell, I just don't think it is possible for an intelligent person to fall in love with a stupid person.
I don't really know why I watched Itazura na Kiss ~ Love in Tokyo considering how I feel about its premise. It is probably because it was an easy watch for me since I already know the story, and I was expecting that this production would be able to execute the story well so I will still enjoy watching it despite not really liking its premise.
I found the drama promising when I watched the first two episodes as it gave off a realistic vibe to what is actually a fantastical production. Everything went downhill from the third episode onward because the characters, particularly the female lead character Aihara Kotoko, became more caricature-like and displayed facial expressions that may have been acceptable and necessary in manga but definitely out of place and annoying in a drama. At least in my opinion.
I really wish the acting style of the first two episodes remained throughout the series. I would have probably enjoyed this drama if that had been the case. This is an okay production but if someone asks my opinion on what adaptation of Itazura na Kiss they should watch, I would definitely recommend the earlier Japanese version, and this version would be a far second choice.
It may be because I have been watching too many dramas lately with delinquent male characters so it was refreshing to have Irie Naoki on the screen. I like that there were several scenes that showed he is incredibly smart and well educated, such as when he is speaking in English (a foreign language from the perspective of the Japanese) about economics, or when he is quoting a famous statesman.
Irie Naoki: "It's important to have the ability to distinguish between impossible and possible." by Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield
Irie Naoki: "If it is merely difficult, all you need is the mental strength to follow through, and an inability to give up, and things will work out." by Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield
I have to mention that I was slightly bothered with the excessive scenes showing the skirt of actress Miki Honoka while in character as Kotoko. I can't really give an exact number but I think the fact that I have noticed it means there are a lot of such scenes in the drama. I think even one or two of such scenes is already too much as there is really no point in showing her skirt while she's walking or climbing stairs, is there? I mean, why not just show her whole body or a close-up of her face or what she's looking at?
