This is a really great movie to watch because the characters are quirky and interesting, the cases are strange and complicated, and the outcome not always black and white.

I especially like the drama because it explored the mysteries of the human brain and human abilities. It is said that the average person only uses around 10% of their brain so what is the 90% for? Perhaps people who can manage to make use of the other 90% (or part of it, thereof) of their brain have special abilities and extraordinary characteristics.

SYNOPSIS
After training with the FBI in the US, Tōma Saya returns to Japan to work in Mishō, a special division in the police department that solves difficult and mysterious cases.

SPEC Rei is a great drama to watch because the characters are quirky and interesting, the cases are strange and complicated, and the outcome not always black and white.

I especially like the SPEC series of production because it explored the mysteries of the human brain and human abilities. It is said that the average person only uses around 10% of their brain so what is the 90% for? Perhaps people who can manage to make use of the other 90% (or part of it, thereof) of their brain have special abilities and extraordinary characteristics.

Tōma Saya: A typical human normally uses 10% of his brain. We still don't know what's hidden in the other 90%. But the powerful people of this world has already concluded that there are people whose latent abilities or SPEC has been awakened. And so, those people with SPEC or SPEC holders become human resources just like oil and rare metals.

Because of the special abilities of criminals or other people involved in the case, it is difficult to try to figure out what the special ability was and who has it, who was the real criminal, and how the crime was committed exactly. So when it's time for Tōma Saya to explain what really happened, everyone's all ears.

SPEC Rei can be considered as a short introduction to the world of SPEC. It shows snippets of what happened in Saya's past and in Sebumi's past, including things that were not presented in the previous SPEC productions.

This is a confusing drama to watch as the scenes are not presented in a linear way, and the scenes go back and forth without much warning whatsoever. Generally though, most of the scenes in this production occurred prior to the time frame in the ケイゾク 2: SPEC (Keizoku 2: SPEC) drama.

For people who have watched the previous SPEC productions, I don't really think it is necessary to watch SPEC Rei because I don't think any of the new scenes are in any way significant. I may be wrong and the new scenes may be important, but right now I think otherwise.

Perhaps people who can manage to make use of the other 90% (or part of it, thereof) of their brain have special abilities and extraordinary characteristics.

Tōma Saya: I've been wondering... Why the earth gave rise to creatures like human beings? And why do do creatures have to evolve? And who decides how they do?

Because of the special abilities of criminals or other people involved in the case, it is difficult to try to figure out what the special ability was and who has it, who was the real criminal, and how the crime was committed exactly. So when it's time for Tōma Saya to explain what really happened, everyone's all ears.

I found SPEC Ten confusing because it talked about the 'Third Secret of Fatima' and it wasn't really clear if it is in any way related to the 'Simple Plan' of a certain group of powerful individuals. Basically, there are a lot of new characters in the movie and there are a lot of things that happened, and everything was all over the place that I wasn't sure how to relate everything to the bigger picture.

I didn't like how the opening scene is set in the future and it was implied that Tomō Saya and Sebumi Takeru have left this world. It spoiled the whole thing for me because why else would I want to watch the rest of the movie when the potential ending is already given right at the start?

SPEC Ten discussed how people with special abilities and extraordinary characteristics or SPEC holders are also human beings. It seemed that SPEC holders are criminals considering that they are usually the suspects in the cases handled by Mishō but it is not fair to generalize. Some SPEC holders may be criminals the way that some human beings are also criminals, and it is possible that the rest of the SPEC holders are just trying to survive in a world where they are being targeted just for being different from the rest of the ordinary folk.

Sebumi Takeru: They (SPEC holders) are criminals. Our job is to maintain public security.
Tōma Saya: Security? Security for who? I get the sense that something isn't equal... SPEC holders are people too.

I enjoyed SPEC Ten the least out of all the SPEC productions because it is not a stand-alone production. I have watched all the previous SPEC productions prior to watching this movie and I still struggled to make sense of things.

SYNOPSIS
Sebumi Takeru takes a break from work because of his eye problems. Tōma Saya escorts Takeru on his first day back at work and they are both surprised with the new changes in their division.

In Mishō, a special division solving difficult cases in the police department, section chief Nonomura Kotaro is demoted to chief clerk. Ichiyanagi Kenzo is appointed as new section chief and Yoshikawa Yu joins the team.

A mysterious case is given to their division and Takeru suspects that Ninomae Juichi is the potential suspect. Saya is adamant that Juichi, who is actually her long-lost brother Tōma Yōta, is not the culprit.

Bothered that Saya is letting personal matters affect her work and is keeping a lot of secrets from him, Takeru investigates on his own...

So when it's time for Tōma Saya to explain what really happened, everyone's all ears.

SPEC Shō shows how biases may affect one's actions and judgments in so many ways. For instance, everyone suspects that Tōma Saya is not seeing Ninomae Juichi as a potential suspect in the case because he is actually her long-lost brother Tōma Yōta. But I also think that everyone, particularly Sebumi Takeru, is focusing closely on Juichi and is actually conducting their investigations to prove he is the suspect instead of doing a proper investigation, and coming up with several potential suspects, and follow wherever the evidences lead them.

Tōma Saya: You don't see anything, you can't see! Are those eyes not healed yet?!
Sebumi Takeru: Now I know for sure you don't trust me.
Tōma Saya: That should be my line.

I'm equally impressed and appalled that the actual suspect in the case is a teenager in high school, primarily because she was able to lead experienced police detectives on a wild goose chase. It's quite impressive that she was able to execute her plans almost without a hitch, and it is dreadful that Saya didn't figure out she was the culprit until it was almost too late.

SYNOPSIS
There are a couple of police detectives as part of Mishō, a special division solving difficult cases. Tōma Saya is a woman with an IQ of 201, a huge appetite with strange tastes in food, and an inability to 'read the atmosphere' and relate to others in social situations. Due to a previous case, Saya's left arm is in a sling.

Her partner Sebumi Takeru used to be the star performer of the Metropolitan Police. After some incident, he was transferred to Mishō. Saya and Takeru track down offenders with special abilities (SPEC) who managed to get away with their crimes.

The twists in the story line is also something I did not know, since I haven't watched the first season of the drama and I haven't read the manga it was based on. The twists were really unexpected but quite interesting. It's not the usual way plot lines go so it was a really great story development.

Keizoku 2: SPEC also made me think what kind of special ability or extraordinary characteristic I would like to have. It would be interesting to know the future (say, what lottery numbers will win tomorrow) or to be able to stop time at important moments (and maybe redo things all over again)...
