SYNOPSIS
Kudō Shinichi is a famous high school student detective. He witnessed some men in black engage in a suspicious deal and one of those men made Shinichi take a poison known as APT4869. Shinichi later woke up as an elementary school boy and he adopted the identity of Edogawa Conan, a genius child who solves crimes.
Mōri Ran is invited by her good friend Toyama Kazuha to visit the filming location for a historical film in Kyoto. Kazuha is there to watch her childhood friend Hattori Heiji, who is Osaka's famous high school detective, portray his role as a shinsengumi. Ran invites Shinichi to go with her.
The Closed Room Murder at 10,000 Meters
On their airplane ride to Kyoto, Ran remembers the first case that Shinichi has solved one year ago. An award-winning photographer was found dead in the airplane's lavatory.
Shinichi figures out how the victim died and has narrowed down the potential suspects to four passengers. In order to find the killer, Shinichi has to find the murder weapon.
Kyoto - The Film Studio Mystery Case
When they finally reach the film set in Kyoto, Shinichi and Ran find out that the film's lead actor Sakuraba Reīchi is receiving threatening letters. Soon after, an accident occurs while filming where Reīchi, Heiji, and a an extra are injured.
The film's lead actress Hayashibara Momoka is later found dead at her waiting room. A popular idol and Reīchi's girlfriend, she is the one that helped Reīchi to be cast in the lead role. In her suicide note, she acknowledged responsibility for the film accident because she is angry with Reīchi for cheating on her with his ex-girlfriend.
Shinichi is suspicious of foul play but he needs to find evidence that points to the man behind the mystery case.
REVIEW
Kudō Shinichi Kyoto Shinsengumi Satsujin Jiken tackles two murder cases that occurred at different times and at different places. I think it's interesting how the drama managed to tie the two mysteries together in one production.
In both cases, Kudō Shinichi figured out how the victims died but he lacks evidence that point to the killers. Unfortunately, all the clues that lead to the real killers are presented in a really subtle way that viewers can have a hard time making intelligent guesses on who the killers are and why they killed the victims.
In this drama, we meet Osaka's high school detective Hattori Heiji and his childhood friend Toyama Kazuha; they seem to have the same relationship dynamics as Shinichi and his childhood friend Mōri Ran. Heiji and Shinichi seemed to have worked together on a case in the past, and it would have been fun to see them work on a case together this time around; too bad Heiji had to lie unconscious on a hospital bed while Shinichi was doing his investigations.
Anyway, I liked how this production explicitly showed that Shinichi has special feelings for Ran, the same way that she has romantic feelings for him. It's satisfying to know that there's really something going on between them even though they are not officially dating each other, rather than just make presumptions.
I always get confused when I watch Meitantei Conan productions like this one because I tend to think in a linear way and so, I always try to figure out when these cases occurred in Shinichi's life. I mean, most of these cases happened before Shinichi became Edogawa Conan but I don't know which cases came before which cases. It may be futile to think about the timeline but I can't help it, really.
