SYNOPSIS
Akiyama Shuntaro is a happy-go-lucky guy who seems to be spending his days aimlessly. Although he's a fourth year university student who attends a third-rate university in Tokyo, he doesn't seem to be overly concerned with looking for a job, presumably because his family's connections can help him in one way or another.
One day on his way to university, Shuntaro hits his head while riding the train and loses consciousness. When he regains consciousness, he can see people's destinations written on top of their heads. However, with some people, their destinations are blacked out...
REVIEW
Chō Gentei Nōryoku is an interesting drama about having a superpower. If you have a choice about what kind of superpower to have, what will you choose? And if you ever have a superpower, what will you do with it?
Akiyama Shuntaro was thinking about what kind of superpower he wishes to have, when he suddenly has the ability to see people's destinations written on top of their heads when he rides the train. It seems like such a trivial ability to have, but he gets to use it so that he can get to sit on the trains.
But then, there are some people whose destinations are blacked out and Shuntaro later learns that this means these people have no destination in mind and are planning to commit suicide. Shuntaro was devastated when he finds out that a person he saw had no destination in mind had died.
Shuntaro has told his best friend Saito Yoshihide about his special ability, but Yoshihide is preoccupied with looking for a good job and passing job interviews. Yoshihide can't be concerned about random people Shuntaro sees while riding the train when he is worried about getting a job that determines the rest of his life.
Saito Yoshihide: Shun, have you ever read a rejection letter? "We are very sorry to inform you that you have not been selected for this position. The decision was extremely difficult, but we wish you have a better chance at another company." It's bad news, but they call it 'praying for success' mail. Isn't it weird? Treating rejection as prayer?
Yoshihide loses all hope when he fails all the interviews he has lined up, and he commits suicide. Shuntaro is especially affected because he couldn't help his best friend when he needed him the most.
When Shuntaro sees that Hashida Miyuki is also planning to commit suicide, he is determined to help her. When Miyuki told him about her circumstances, he told her that he can't really make the situation better for her but he can listen to her troubles and be there for her.
When you think about it, knowing that people are planning to commit suicide is an awful ability to have precisely because it's a matter of life and death, literally. When you know that someone is planning to die but you don't know any of the details, you feel that you have to do something right away to help that person and prevent him from committing suicide.
