SYNOPSIS
Kawanabe Mikako is a history teacher who can't get her high school students to listen in class because they find it boring. Her students -- studious Numata Shintaro, cute Morino Eri, and lazy Takase Masaya -- are not particularly invested in learning about Japanese history.
Masaya downloads an app on his mobile phone about Japanese history. He thought it will help him cheat on his history tests, but the app just made his teacher and the three students travel back in time to the late Edo period...
REVIEW
Bakumatsu Kōkōsei is an interesting movie about Japanese history, particularly what it's like for people to go back in the past and see how historical events unfold in real time.
Kawanabe Mikako: You have to live in your own time.
Time travel themes are complicated because it's important to establish rules that make sense. In this film, four individuals traveled back in time together but they arrived in the past at different times: studious Numata Shintaro arrived a year ago, cute Morino Eri came six months ago, lazy Takase Masaya arrived two days ago, and their history teacher Kawanabe Mikako came just the day before. It wasn't really explained how that came to be, and I wondered why that is the case.
It's fascinating to learn history through reading books and watching films, but I never really thought about going back in time and experience it firsthand.
