SYNOPSIS
Do Min Joon is an alien who came to earth in 1609 and lands in South Korea during the Joseon era. He then lives through the next four hundred years to the present day, waiting for an opportunity to leave the earth and go back to where he came from. In 2013, he works as university professor.
Popular actress Chun Song Yi gets in trouble with the Korean public for her lack of intelligence. She then attends college classes to improve her public image. However, Song Yi gets in trouble with a strict professor, who also turns out to be her neighbor.
REVIEW
You from Another Star has a convoluted plot with fascinating characters but it fails to deliver in several ways. It is still an entertaining drama despite its shortcomings though.
I adore Chun Song Yi as a character but objectively speaking, she's not particularly well-written. I understand that she's not especially intelligent but she is supposed to be street smart and that's what made her survive in the entertainment industry. However, when her life was threatened several times, she doesn't seem to have a clue and she doesn't seem to care enough to be cautious afterwards.
I think what made Song Yi endearing despite the character inconsistencies is the superb acting from Jun Ji Hyun. She portrayed her character with so much heart and I think she carried the entire drama on her shoulders.
Kim Soo Hyun is a good actor and I think he did a fine job portraying Do Min Joon, but I somehow feel that he's too young, or maybe too young-looking, to pull off the world-weary old soul character. I don't know really, it just seems off at certain times.
I hate how the drama ended because it left a lot of unanswered questions. I don't like how it had all these arbitrary rules that were not followed in the end, mainly because I am left clueless when I try to make sense of things.
How come Min Joon can choose where and when to go back to earth, but he cannot choose how long he stays? How come he stays longer as he gains more experience in getting back to earth? How come he cannot choose when to go back to wherever he goes? Is that all he does at wherever he is when he's not on earth, keep trying to go back to earth and be with Song Yi?
