SYNOPSIS
A young man introduces himself as the onmyōji Abe no Shomei, and he opens an onmyōya shop in the shopping district of Oji town in Kita ward in Tokyo.
An onmyōya is a yin and yang shop that abides by the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. The yin and yang, including the five elements, are used to explain various incidents that happen in life. The onmyōji uses this knowledge to predict luck and fortune. He also comes up with countermeasures needed to dispel bad luck.
Actually, Abe no Shomei is a different reading for the man's real name, which is Abe Yoshiaki. Although he worked as a host using the name Shō, Yoshiaki is actually from a very wealthy family who are historically headed by a powerful onmyōji.
REVIEW
Yorozu Uranai Dokoro Onmyōya e Yōkoso is a fun drama about an onmyōji who opened an onmyōya shop in a small town where the local residents have close relations with each other. They are initially distrustful of Abe Yoshiaki who introduces himself as Abe no Shomei, but they gradually consider him as one of them over time.
The drama explains what an onmyōya shop is for, and it also discusses what the work of an onmyōji traditionally entails. But more than that, it shows how an onmyōya and an onmyōji can still be relevant in the modern times.
Although an onmyōji is historically known as having special powers, Yoshiaki doesn't have any despite coming from a long line of powerful onmyōji. However, even though he doesn't have any supernatural abilities, Yoshiaki resolves any issue brought to him by his customers because of his exceptional observation skills and his deep understanding of human nature.
I like that Yoshiaki usually couldn't be bothered to exert effort unless he'll get something in return, often a monetary compensation. It is unusual to get anything for free, and I think Yoshiaki is fostering a win-win situation because he helps his customers to resolve their issues, and he is duly compensated for his troubles.
Yorozu Uranai Dokoro Onmyōya e Yōkoso had left a lot of unresolved issues though, such as Sawazaki Shunta not knowing his relation to his birth mother Amemiya Satsuki and her family. It is Shunta's right to know the truth, and I think he will be in a much better position to decide his future for himself if he is informed about the circumstances of his birth mother's family.
