SYNOPSIS
Ha Jung Hoon and Jung Hye Yoon have been dating for three years and they have decided to get married. Although they are roughly the same age, Jung Hoon is an ordinary office worker who earns less than Hye Yoon, who is a teacher.
Hye Yoon's best friend Min Dong Bi has been dating Jung Hoon's older cousin Ki Joong for five years. She wants to marry him but Ki Joong does not intend to marry her.
Hye Yoon's older sister Jung Hye Jin is married to plastic surgeon Nam Do Hyun and they have a little toddler named Nam Tae Won. Do Hyun was actually previously married to someone else and Hye Jin is his mistress. Do Hyun eventually divorced his first wife and married Hye Jin because Hye Jin became pregnant.
Hye Yoon's mother Deul Ja is disappointed to find out that her youngest daughter is marrying an ordinary office worker because she has high hopes that her daughters will marry well.
REVIEW
I enjoyed the first few episodes of the drama and I like some of the lead characters, so I initially thought this could be one of the dramas I can add to my 'favorites' list. Unfortunately though, this is not the case.
I liked Ha Jung Hoon and Jung Hye Yoon because they seemed like a sweet couple who are in a mature relationship but it is later evident that they are immature individuals pretending to have a serious relationship. Their juvenile actions may be somewhat acceptable for teenagers or even people in their early 20s but are truly unbecoming for people in their late 20s.
I think Hye Yoon is such a scary person because she is calculating and manipulative. She calculated that Jung Hoon loves her so he will fight for her, and he comes from a good but average family background so his family will be able to tolerate her own less-than-acceptable family background. Although Jung Hoon has stated that he thinks they should marry after two or three years when he is more established in his career, Hye Yoon manipulated him into proposing to her and marrying her now, sooner rather than later. I suppose it's a good thing that Hye Yoon is being logical and practical about her future plans but I don't know, I didn't like it for some reason.
Hye Yoon's mother Deul Ja is quite a character; she wears makeup that makes her look like a prostitute, she talks in an uncouth manner, she has no social graces whatsoever, and her obsession with money possibly clouds the rational aspects of her personality.
Deul Ja wants her daughters to marry well and I do understand where she's coming from because I know that mothers want the best for their children. But sometimes people, like in her case, are mistaken about the concept of 'the best'.
Jung Hoon's father seems normal but his mother is kind of like Deul Ja; Jung Hoon's mother is obsessed with appearances and keeping up with the Jones or rather, her sister. Although I understand her expectations (and later disappointment when her expectations are not met) are brought about by her own upbringing and lifestyle, I can't help but feel that she is selfish for trying to impose such expectations on Hye Yoon and her family when she is aware that Hye Yoon comes from a poor background.
