SYNOPSIS
The documentary examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.
REVIEW
Forks Over Knives is a documentary about how a person's diet can affect his health, and it's practically common knowledge but the idea is supported by scientific studies and other fascinating information.
It is important to note that you consult professional medical experts if you want to make changes in your diets, especially if you have existing medical conditions. I think it's always necessary to get a second or third opinion, even if you are already talking with the experts.
Forks Over Knives promotes a diet of vegetables, fruits, grains, and oats for ultimate health. This is not rocket science, and I think most people are already aware that processed food does not provide adequate nutrition.
The film takes it even further by saying people shouldn't consume animal-based products, such as meat and dairy, if they want to be healthy. I'm skeptical about this aspect because well, there is such a thing as moderation, and I think people can be healthy if they eat moderately.
I'm assuming eliminating animal-based products from a diet means not consuming fish and other marine animals, and I don't think that's a very feasible proposition. Besides, there are many people who are considered healthy even though some animal-based products are part of their diet.
I wonder why the film didn't refer to the whole-food and plant-based diet as a vegan diet because it basically is just that, and the former is too much of a mouthful to articulate.
Forks Over Knives states that a whole-food and plant-based diet can prevent many types of cancers and the so-called lifestyle diseases, such as hear disease and type 2 diabetes. The film also states that in some cases, this particular diet can also cure these diseases.
Anyway, I like the quotes presented in the movie, and although I've already used it as screenshots, I am still listing these quotes here.
Let thy food be thy medicine. -- Hippocrates
The doctor if the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition. -- Thomas Edison
He that takes medicine and neglects diet, wastes the time of his doctor. -- Ancient Chinese Proverb
One-quarter of what you eat keeps you alive. The other three-quarters keeps your doctor alive. -- Ancient Egyptian Proverb
Personally, I mostly stick to a diet of 'natural food' (rather, food that exists in nature) and I don't really like eating meat. However, I don't think I can strictly follow a whole-food and plant-based diet because I love fresh cow's milk, and I would like to eat meat at times, and I would want to eat some not-so-healthy food once in a while. Despite my better judgment, there are some junk food that I wouldn't want to live without.
