SYNOPSIS
The documentary explores the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America, and challenges the media's limited portrayal of what it means to be a powerful woman.

REVIEW
Miss Representation is an intriguing documentary about the misrepresentation of women in the media, and how that affects the reality of women.

Women are under tremendous pressure to conform to strict beauty ideals, and it's frustrating because people are conditioned to see a woman's value based only on her appearance.

It can also be especially hard for some women because these beauty standards are sometimes not achievable because of genetics. What can you do if, say, the society views fair skin as attractive and you're ethnically a people of color?!

Moreover, the concepts of beauty for women are usually associated with youth, and that's really annoying because youth is temporary. It's very hard to find mature women roles in movies and television shows, as if older women don't exist (or they don't matter even if they do exist).

The emphasis on a woman's appearance threatens her potential in so many other ways. Because people usually just focus on a woman's face and body, there are often no expectations of her anywhere else, such as in terms of her intelligence or her profession.

Miss Representation discusses how women in power are presented in the media. Women in politics are usually criticized for their appearance, and their credentials and accomplishments are often undermined.

Because of traditional images attributed to men and women, women who assume posts historically occupied by men are often ridiculed for trying to be someone she's not, i.e. powerful, intelligent, professional, etc.
