SYNOPSIS
Kuroda Seira lived in India, where her father owns a mining business. Her father sent her to Japan to continue her education at an affluent boarding school.
Although wealthy and considered a princess, Seira is kind and generous. She is also very smart and very polite. She earned many friends at school although there are a few people who don't like her: a classmate Takeda Maria and the school director Mimura Chieko.
During Seira's 16th birthday party, the school director informs her that her father has died in a mining accident and his company went bankrupt, which leaves her penniless. In order to pay off her school bills, Seira is forced to work as a servant at the boarding school.
REVIEW
Shokojo Seira is based on A Little Princess, a children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It's a story I am familiar with ever since I was young and I have fond memories of it because I like the lead character and the story's moral lessons so I cannot pass up watching this adaptation.
Kuroda Seira has the necessary characteristics that describe Sara Crewe. She lead a privileged life but she remains pure at heart. What I didn't like in the drama is that Seira seemed to pity herself when she became poor and she seemed incapable of doing simple chores such as washing dishes. Based on my interpretation, Seira doesn't care about wealth and status, and she is someone capable of doing things quite well, even things she didn't know how to do beforehand.
What I really like in the drama is how there are a lot of scenes with Seira and Miura Kaito. In other adaptations of the story, their friendship and potential romance are always undeveloped. I really like how there were a lot of scenes that quietly showed how much Kaito cares for Seira.
If you want to watch a production where you want to be reminded about people's inherent goodness and how good people always end up living happily, then you might want to give this drama a try. There's a huge amount of dramatic moments, but you'll definitely get a 'and they lived happily ever after' in the end.
