SYNOPSIS
小田和正 Oda Kazumasa - こころ Kokoro (Heart)Fukunaga Mio's heart is a ticking time bomb that can explode any time if she's not careful about taking her medicines and getting regular check-ups. Mio's one chance for a better life is a very complicated heart surgery where she gets a 50% probability that she will be able to survive.
Before undergoing the surgery, Mio wants to come back to Japan to visit her older brother. Mio last saw her elder brother Kano Kazuki ten years ago when their parents divorced. Mio went to live with her mom while her brother lived with their dad, hence they have different surnames.
Kazuki couldn't wait to see his sweet and good-natured younger sister. He was in for a surprise when the angelic sister he was looking forward to meet has transformed into a selfish brat with a sarcastic tongue and a sassy attitude.
When Kazu found out about Mio's health condition, he wanted to do something special for her but he doesn't really know what to do.
REVIEW
I love the theme song of First Kiss! It was one of the best Japanese drama theme songs I've come across and it will definitely remain one of my favorites for all time. I actually got to know about the drama because of the theme song instead of the other way around, which is how it usually goes for me.
It was weird to see Kano Kazuki so heavily invested in his younger sister's love life, or lack thereof. Kazu kept thinking and devising ways for Fukunaga Mio to meet guys and to fall in love. Even when Mio was going out on dates, her brother had to interfere to make her more presentable and appealing to guys.
It was quite interesting to see Mio's inexperience with love: falling in love for the first time with her doctor Yuki Akio, acting up when she finds out who the doctor's crush is, confessing her love to the doctor, going out on dates, and experiencing her first kiss.
I know of love blossoming between doctors as well as between doctors and nurses. However, the first time I've come across love blossoming between a doctor and a patient is through this drama. Doctors are supposed to be objective when treating their patients, which is the reason why they are not supposed to treat their family and friends. I suppose it can possibly happen in real life but it is still out of the ordinary.
What I didn't like about Mio's love story is how she is always one step ahead of the doctor's. She was the one who was attracted first, she was the one who confessed her feelings first (under the pretext of teaching the doctor how to lie well), she was the one who always gets to the destination first whenever they go out on dates, and basically she's always waiting for the guy.
Mio may be more clearheaded given that she's aware of how much limited time she has and perhaps the doctor is just busy with his studies and work. However, it would be really nice if there were more instances wherein the doctor is the one who initiates things rather than Mio.
