SYNOPSIS
A young girl is reported missing by her parents one night, and her dead body is found in a local park's toilet early the next morning.
Kaga Kyoichiro of the Western Nerima Police Department is assigned to work with his cousin Matsumiya Shuhei of the First Investigation Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department to solve the case.
REVIEW
Akai Yubi is about how families, both the victim's family and the suspect's family, are affected when a crime takes place. This is actually a sequel to the drama 新参者 Shinzanmono, so it was great to see police detectives Kaga Kyoichiro and Matsumiya Shuhei back in action. I wish it had been solely told from the perspective of the detectives.
It focuses on a criminal's family and how they may deal with the incident. They may all be in despair about the situation, and they may possibly wish that it hadn't happened, but they may react differently. In this particular case, the parents are trying to cover up the crime and are even setting up an innocent person as the culprit.
I think it's interesting how the drama is about why people lie and withhold the truth. The important question is not really if people are lying or withholding any information; rather it is 'if they are, why are people lying or why are they withholding information?'.
Aoyama Ami: People lie... to hide their weakness... to protect what's important in their lives... to escape from their hardships.
Kaga Kyoichiro: Our job isn't just to reveal the truth. How and when we expose it is more important.
Akai Yubi also discusses the precious relationship between parents and children. There are parents who love their children by spoiling them rotten, and they don't realize that they are destroying their children's lives until it is sometimes too late to do anything about it.
