SYNOPSIS
Hayamizu Yuri is a police detective who is supposed to go on maternity leave, but she is called to handle a case where a newborn baby has been kidnapped from a hospital.
Chikamori Yuko cannot find her baby Chikamori Nozomi who was born just a week ago. Yuko was a former Olympic athlete who is married to Chikamori Hiroshi, a Nobel Prize winner.
Who took baby Nozomi? Why is she kidnapped? What do the kidnappers want?
REVIEW
Designer Baby is an interesting drama about babies and gene manipulation. It raises questions about life, as a whole, and whether we can manipulate genes so that babies will have better chances at life.
When Chikamori Nozomi was taken by someone from the hospital, it seemed like something that shouldn't happen at all because babies are supposed to be safe at a maternity ward of a hospital. But there have been a lot of cases where babies were abducted in hospitals, and it's a reminder to take safety precautions everywhere.
Anyway, the drama talks about gene manipulation, from selecting the embryos that makes certain miscarriages and stillbirths are less likely to happen, to removing the genes that carry hereditary diseases.
I think gene manipulation is a very complicated matter. If we say it's okay to a certain extent, what is that threshold that makes it acceptable and not acceptable? Who gets to decide if it is acceptable or not? Is it the experts who know extensively about the matter? Is it the patients who own the genes and pay for the medical costs?
