REVIEW
The Last Five Years is an interesting movie about a couple's love affair from when they got together until they went their separate ways. It is a reflection on the last five years that Cathy Hiatt and Jamie Wellerstein have spent together, to see if maybe there's some lesson to be learned from their failed relationship.
It is actually based on a musical, so the characters are mostly singing their dialogues. Although I haven't seen the play prior to watching the movie adaptation, I am familiar with the songs because I have already listened to the soundtrack of the 2002 off-Broadway production of The Last 5 Years.
It wasn't told in a chronological order so it was a little confusing at times. It is sometimes easy to figure out where a particular scene falls in the timeline, but there are a few scenes wherein I don't know if it occurred when Cathy and Jamie are dating, or when they are already married to each other.
I wonder what's the purpose of the haphazard arrangement of the scenes. I mean, it would be easier to follow the story if it actually went in order of when things happened. And would that purpose be lost if the film was told in a linear way?
