SYNOPSIS
Set in the 1930s, Lee Kang To is a police officer who has adopted the Japanese name Sato Hiroshi. He is viewed by the Korean people as a traitor because he works for the Imperial Japanese empire and he leads the capture of key members of the independence movement.
Mok Dan is a member of a circus troupe and the daughter of an independence army leader. Her father left her when she was young to fight for independence and Mok Dan is looking for him now that she's an adult.
Kimura Shunji grew up in a family with a samurai background. He was born in South Korea and has an affection for the country, choosing to become a teacher there to educate young children.
REVIEW
Although what happened in Bridal Mask are based on historical events, I can't help but still consider it as somewhat realistic and somewhat fictional. I grew up in a different time and in a different situation so I'm afraid I can't really understand such events in the same way as someone who has experienced similar things can.
I'm not really sure but I think I may have also subconsciously detached myself from the drama. It was primarily for self-preservation because it would be too harrowing and too painful otherwise.
I really like the friendship between Lee Kang To and Kimura Shunji. I'm quite sad that they eventually had to go their separate ways because of their convictions and because of the people that they have become.
Although Kang To lost all of his loved ones, he is actually quite fortunate because he found out that his whole family is fighting for a greater cause, he became a better person, he has found mentors and colleagues who have become his family, he has avenged his family's deaths, he has married the love of his life, and he is making a difference in other people's lives.
Shunji is the unfortunate one because he lost all of his loved ones, he became an evil person, he lost his best friend, he killed the only person he loved, and he died at his own hands in the end. What's even worse is that he realized that everything he did that he believed is for a noble cause may actually be meaningless and worthless.
