SYNOPSIS
Asagi Serina is a housewife who loves her husband Asagi Takefumi and does not mind being his shadow. Takefumi finds her excessive devotion burdensome and gross.
One day, Serina goes out for a meal with her good friend Tokura Motoko and her co-workers at the publishing company. A man in the group makes a move on Serina and it is captured on film by a detective named Jinnai Haruki.
Not wanting her husband to see the photograph, Serina begs him to delete the incriminating picture. Haruki demands a payment of JPY300,000 to do so but Serina does not have the money so she starts working at Jinnai’s detective agency as an assistant.
REVEW
Asagi Serina is a very difficult character to sympathize with because she's so in love with her husband Asagi Takefumi that her life revolves around him and that's the only thing that defines her, really. She's so happy to serve and support her husband that she doesn't mind that she is considered as his shadow and honestly, I still don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Serina is pretty much content with her life but then she finds out that her husband may be having an affair and she makes a conscious decision to fight for her husband and her marriage. She slowly changes from being a plain doormat housewife to becoming an independent and beautiful woman.
Private investigator Jinnai Haruki, who later became Serina's boss, was someone who influenced Serina to get out of her comfort zone and face reality, even if that reality is not something she wants or likes. After all, only if you face reality head on will you be able to figure out how to act and react to the circumstances.
Jinnai Haruki: I bet you've been living with your eyes closed all this time. Are you going to spend your whole life running, hiding, and turning away from things you don't like? Look at reality with your eyes wide open.
Personally, I think Serina was quite amusing at the start of the drama because she's actually an ideal housewife: she's always put together even though she dresses simply and wears natural or 'barely-there' make-up, she keeps a clean house, she cooks very well, and she's very supportive of her husband.
Of course, it was also interesting when Serina became a detective's assistant and she grew as a person in so many ways. I think it's always a good thing that a person becomes more confident and more independent.
Serina's relationship with her husband was quite complicated but they have managed to work things out in the end. Asagi Takafumi actually cheated on her but she forgave his transgression and still accepted him as her husband so that's a good thing for them, I suppose. I don't think I can forgive cheating but that's just my personal choice.
One thing that I did find strange in Sengyō Shufu Tantei ~Watashi wa Shadow is how Serina and her husband sleep in separate beds. Instead of a king-size or queen-size bed, they have twin beds in their bedroom. I found it extraordinary and quite surprising, but perhaps such arrangements are common in Japan?!
