SYNOPSIS
Several students at Kirin Art High School work to achieve their dreams of becoming music stars in the Korean music industry.
Go Hye Mi is a student who had majored in classical music but has to enter Kirin Art High School and work as an idol to pay off her father's debt. However, her enrollment to the school depends on her fulfillment of the principal's condition that she convinces two other students to attend the school.
These two students are Song Sam Dong, who lives in the countryside, and Jin Guk, whom she accidentally meets while trying to escape from a loan shark.
Yoon Baek Hee, formerly Hye Mi's sidekick, becomes her rival in school because Hye Mi betrays her during an audition to enter the school.
REVIEW
There were some particular scenes in Dream High that caught my attention because these are some things worth thinking about, at least in my opinion. These story lines happened to minor characters but I'd like to think the issues tackled were a major concern.
Jason is someone who opens doors for all girls, greets everyone nicely, and is basically supposedly an all-around good guy. However, it was pointed out by Go Hye Mi that he shouldn't be nice to everyone because people will misunderstand, particularly some girls who will think that Jason likes them romantically.
What is wrong with being a gentleman and being considerate to all women, instead of just the girls you are in love with? Is there no other way for girls to think that a guy likes them aside from basic good manners? That's quite an alarming thought, really.
Kim Pil Sook is an overweight girl with overwhelming talent. She likes Jason but he only likes her as a friend so she vows to lose 30 kilograms in 200 days and hopes Jason will like her as a special someone then. It's quite sad that she goes through all that trouble for another person and not for her or for her health.
Pil Sook goes to her teacher Maeng Seung Hee who tells her, "Do you know why the saying 'beauty is a skill' came about? Because with effort, it can be changed. There are no ugly girls in this world, just lazy ones. If you work hard, you can do it (become beautiful)."
I don't quite agree that there are no ugly girls in the world because there are some features that are not appealing. And even science proves that symmetry is important when it comes to beauty. But I agree that a person can become the most beautiful version of herself by taking care of herself and by making herself as presentable as she can possibly be.
Actor Kim Soo Hyun surprised me in this drama. I've always heard he's a good actor, but he has shown through the drama that he also has competent skills in singing and dancing. I think it's rare enough to be skilled in one field so to be exceptionally talented in three fields, that's really really something!
