SYNOPSIS
Perfume - Tokyo GirlKamata Rinko, Yamakawa Kaori, and Torī Koyuki are now thirty (30) years old and they have been friends since high school. They regularly gather at Koyuki's father's bar to talk about their lives, and to talk about 'what-if' scenarios.
Rinko works as a novice screenwriter and she works with producer Hayasaka Tetsuro who is quite successful in his career. He used to work with Rinko eight years ago and he confessed his feelings to her but she turned him down because she thinks he's a loser and that she could do better.
Kaori used to date a guy who works in a band, but she left him because of his uncertain financial prospects. Years later, Kaori meets her ex-boyfriend who is now a successful artist and is dating a popular model.
Koyuki finally met someone who is exactly her type, and who seems to be attracted to her as well. The guy declares his desire to date her, but he also tells her that he's already married to someone else.
REVIEW
Tokyo Tarareba Musume is an interesting drama about women and their struggles in their careers and relationships. Three close friends since their college days support each other, as they make various choices in order to find happiness.
Kamata Rinko, Yamakawa Kaori, and Torī Koyuki usually talk about 'things-that-could-have-happened' whenever they discuss their issues, which lead to a stranger who overheard their conversations to call them 'What-If' women. I wonder, is this something that only women do? Don't men wonder about alternative scenarios?
Anyway, Rinko, Kaori, and Koyuki are flawed women who haven't gotten their acts together. They have set goals for themselves that they should achieve when they are 30 years old, and they are nearing the deadline but they are nowhere near accomplishing what they had set out to do.
Tokyo Tarareba Musume presents women in a very realistic way; how they work hard to find happiness, how they sometimes make mistakes in life, and how they are strong enough to deal with the consequences of their choices.
I should probably say that it is not a very good drama overall. I think it has a terrible plot development, and the pacing was particularly awful. The ending also leaves a lot to be desired, because the narrative wasn't handled properly.
