SYNOPSIS
Ouchi Miho lives with her grandparents on a farm in the tiny village of Tomari. She's been applying for jobs for a while, but she hasn't gotten any acceptance letter from any company.
Her grandfather Ouchi Kazuo has been growing organic crops for around twenty years. Miho's father Ouchi Masato started organic farming when it seemed that he'll follow his father's profession, but he left all of a sudden and Masato has been estranged from Miho and her grandparents ever since.
When Miho's grandfather died, she impulsively declares that she'll continue organic farming on their family's land.
REVIEW
Genkai Shūraku Kabushikigaisha is an interesting drama about agriculture, particularly organic farming. It highlights the difficulties of the farmers as they do the back-breaking work; from physical concerns to financial issues.
The drama talks about towns where only the elderly are left because all the younger family members went to the big cities to pursue desk jobs. Even though there are people like Ouchi Miho who wants to stay in their hometowns, there aren't a lot of opportunities for them to pursue lucrative careers.
Agriculture is a noble profession, but it's such a physically demanding job that's not particularly financially rewarding. So I kind of understand why not a lot of people choose to go into farming, especially when there are other options on the table.
