SYNOPSIS
Hanasaki Mai has worked as a bank cashier for five years, where she often gets in trouble with her former manager Sōma Ken for candidly speaking out her mind without a thought to the consequences of her actions. She also has no qualms about directly criticizing her superiors.
Mai was promoted to the Assisting Department at the head office, and she finds out on her first day that her former boss is her superior at her new job.
The Assisting Department is tasked with investigating anomalous cases in the bank branches that has caught the attention of the head office. Ken and Mai go to the bank branches to personally assist the bank managers in resolving the unprecedented issues.
REVIEW
Hanasaki Mai ga Damattenai is about the banking industry and banking operations. The drama made it seem as if the rigid corporate structure and the formal corporate culture are somewhat unique to banks, but I think that's more or less how the working environment is like no matter what the industry.
It's quite strange to see Hanasaki Mai even manage to get a foot in the bank's head office because the banking industry in Japan is quite traditional and male-dominated, probably like most other industries in the country. In the drama, I think Mai is the only woman employed in the main office that doesn't work in the reception area.
It's even more amazing to see Mai tell her superiors off whenever they did something she thought was wrong because it just doesn't happen normally for employees to question their bosses, let alone juniors to scold their superiors.
