A story about the hair-raising minefield between love, attraction and commitment.
Shuddh Desi Romance is a movie about modern relationships, and how some couples don't want to get married although they love each other.
Raghuram and Gayatri are attracted to each other, and they love each other enough to live together. But although they are in a serious relationship, marriage is not really in the cards for both of them.
Gayatri ?: "Say yes to marriage, work it out later." Has it worked for anyone? So why would it work for me?
I imagine it's difficult to have a progressive approach to relationships when you live in a conservative society. I also live in a country where marriage is sacred, and couples who live together are socially frowned upon. It's much worse when certain religions come into the picture, because people who cohabit without the sanctity of marriage are viewed as sinners.
In Shuddh Desi Romance, Raghuram and Gayatri deal with their neighbors and acquaintances by pretending to be siblings. That has got to be very awkward, considering their obvious attraction to each other and the sexual tension between them.
Anyway, for a couple who don't believe in marriage, I can't believe Raghuram and Gayatri agreed to have a wedding ceremony, and they even did it twice! For the first wedding ceremony, they both wanted to run away but Gayatri was the first to do so and they grew apart. For their second wedding ceremony after they reconciled, both Raghuram and Gayatri ran away.
I just think it's such a waste of time and resources to plan a wedding ceremony, only to decide on the fateful day that you don't really want to get married.
