SYNOPSIS
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... - Yeh Ladka Hai Allah
Yashvardhan Raichand and his wife Nandini Raichand has two sons, the eldest Rahul Raichand and the youngest Rohan Raichand. Although Rahul was adopted when he was two years old, Rahul is not treated differently in the family.

Yashvardhan is an old-fashioned man, and he wants to continue the family tradition where the family elders pick the prospective bride or groom for their children. Yashvardhan has arranged Rahul's marriage with Naina Kapoor, a daughter of his business partner and Rahul's childhood friend.

Rahul and Rohan go to their nanny's house for a surprise visit. Rahul meets Anjali Sharma, the daughter of the local sweet shop owner, and he falls in love with her.

Anjali's father suddenly dies, and Anjali and her younger sister Pooja Sharma are left without a head of the family. Rahul marries Anjali to take care of her and Pooja, without his father's knowledge and approval.

REVIEW
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... - Bole Chudiyan
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... is about family relations; the relationships between parents and children, between brothers and sisters, between married individuals, and even between in-laws.

Rahul Raichand: If you want to be someone in life, if you want to achieve something, if you want to win, you should always listen to your heart. And if your heart doesn't give you any answers, close your eyes and think of your parents. Then you'll see... you will achieve every goal, everything that is hard will become easy, and victory will be yours... only yours.

Rahul Raichand: I had a dream since childhood, a dream to be like Papa: to walk like him, speak like him, sit like him; to do everything the way he does... I can't do it. I know I can't do it. And maybe I will never be able to do it because there's no one in this world like my Papa. I know that someone up there is happy with me to have bestowed on me the right to say that I am Yashvardhan Raichand's son; (to) say it proudly. Thank you, Papa.

It is actually too picture-perfect, with the characters being the ideal representations of family members, and with the relationship between them exceptionally intimate.

But I suppose the movie is more memorable because of that, since most people want to be the best person they can be to their families and they want to have great relations with their family members.

It is one of the first Bollywood films I've watched, and it's also one of my favorites. I like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... because of the feisty female characters, and how these female characters are in romantic relationships where they have equal status with their respective partners.

Nandini Raichand is amazing for loving her sons unconditionally, and for somehow loving her adopted son more than the son who came from her (as is repeatedly mentioned in the movie by several characters). I like Anjali Sharma, who later became Anjali Raichand, for not caring about wealth and social status. I find Pooja Sharma, also known as Poo, fascinating because she is the modern woman with traditional values, and anyone knows how complicated being caught in the middle can be.

But I suppose I'm particularly impressed with Naina Kapoor, Rahul's childhood friend who had loved him ever since. Her marriage to Rahul has already been arranged by their parents, but she willingly let him go. I like that Naina loved herself so much to only want the greatest love story for herself.

Naina Kapoor: Rahul! Ever since I can remember, I have loved you; loved you very much. But it isn't your fault (that you don't love me the same way). Just because I dream of marrying you doesn't mean you have to marry me.
Naina Kapoor: And if you are worried that I will be miserable... yes, I will be. I will feel very bad, and it will hurt a lot. But life doesn't stop, does it, Rahul?!
