REVIEW
Bride & Prejudice - Dola Dola
Bride & Prejudice - No Life Without Wife
Bride & Prejudice is an interesting adaptation of the novel Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. Because I have read the novel prior to watching the movie, I had a fun time watching familiar events unfold in a different setting.

Objectively speaking, I think Lalita Bakshi was a tad sensitive about the observations of William 'Will' Darcy regarding India and Indians. It doesn't help that Will doesn't really express himself clearly, and he doesn't choose more diplomatic words when expressing his opinions.

William 'Will' Darcy: There's nothing wrong with having standards, is there?!
Lalita Bakshi: No, as long as you don't impose them on others.

I think I understand Lalita though because it's really hard not to take personally what others say about us, our families, our friends, and our countries. I mean, most people are aware of what's wrong with themselves and their societies, but it's just difficult to accept gracefully when outsiders are dishing out the criticisms.

Anyway, I like the musical productions in Bride & Prejudice because although they seem well-rehearsed, everyone involved seemed to be having a lot of fun. I especially like the lyrics of the song No Life Without Wife, which is about what Lalita doesn't want in a man and what she hopes her future husband will be like.

Lalita Bakshi:
I don't want a man who ties me down,
who does what he wants while I hang around.
I don't want a man who's crude and loud,
who wants a pretty wife to make him proud.
I don't want a man who can't be funny,
who tells tall tales about making money.
I don't want a man who'd grab the best seat,
who can't close his mouth when he starts to eat.
I don't want a man who likes to drink,
or leaves his dirty dishes in the sink.
I don't want a man who wants his mummy,
A balding pest with too much tummy.
I don't want a man who's dead in the head...
...
I just want a man with a real soul,
who wants equality and not control.
I just want a man good and smart,
(who has) a really sharp mind and a very big heart.
I just want a man not scared to weep,
(and) to hold me close when we're asleep.
I just want a man who loves romance,
who'll clear the floor and ask me to dance.
I just want a man who'll give some back,
who talks to me and not my rack.
I just want a man who's spirit is free,
who'll hold my hand and walk the world with me...

It is one of the few Bollywood films that has an English language version and a longer Hindi language version. I watched the movie in English without the need for subtitles, except for a musical number or two. It was a great experience because I didn't have to worry too much about many things being lost in translation.
