SYNOPSIS
Fukushima Keiko introduces herself and her twelve-year-old son Fukushima Akira to their new landlord. Keiko claims that her husband lives abroad, and her only son Akira is a responsible child who takes after her husband.

In their small apartment, Keiko brings out her other children that she did not declare to her landlord: daughters Fukushima Kyōko and Fukushima Yuki, and son Fukushima Shigeru. Most landlords do not want to rent to families with young children so Keiko and Akira have to hide the existence of their other family members.

One day, Keiko leaves an envelope of money to Akira with a note asking him to take care of his younger siblings for a while. Days pass, and even weeks, but still the children's mother shows no sign of returning.

REVIEW
Dare mo Shiranai is a distressing movie about helpless children entrusted into the care of a mother too selfish and too inept to look after herself, let alone four young children.

The film made me want to impose strict rules on when a person could become a parent, because it's really unfair for innocent children to suffer because of their parent's irresponsible and uncaring ways.

It's pitiful to witness Fukushima Kyōko expressing her desire to go to school, only for her mother to discourage her from going. It's sad to see Fukushima Shigeru and Fukushima Yuki keeping quiet because other people are not supposed to know that they even exist.

It's particularly disheartening to see Fukushima Akira try to be the adult in the family, especially when he had to undergo extreme stress and hardship just so he can financially and emotionally support his younger siblings because their mother Fukushima Keiko went away and she has no intention of ever coming back.

Dare mo Shiranai is a very depressing movie to watch, and you have been forewarned that you may just lose some faith in humanity a little bit. What's worse is that it is based on a true story, and the movie actually presented a slightly better version of real events.
