SYNOPSIS
Choi Won is a royal physician of the Crown Prince Lee Ho. Won is one of the few people in the palace that the Crown Prince trusts since they have been best friends since they were children.
Although Won is exceptionally skilled as a doctor, he wants to get out of service and focus on finding a cure for his young daughter Choi Rang's ailment, which is also the same illness that killed his wife.
Because of political machinations of the Queen, the stepmother of the Crown Prince, Won was mistakenly accused of poisoning and attempting to kill the Crown Prince.
Won runs away in order to find evidence to prove his innocence but time is ticking as his daughter's ailment is increasingly getting serious and he needs to find a cure fast.
REVIEW
Mandate of Heaven has a tightly written script and it is definitely an interesting watch, when it comes to political machinations and outwitting enemies. Most of the story development though are presented in the dialogues so that can be a drag sometimes.
I find myself indifferent with the love story between Choi Won and Hong Da In and it's a little frustrating because they are the lead characters and much of the focus is on them. I don't really know if the problem lies with the characters, given that they are too bland, or with the actors portraying the characters, given that they have absolutely no chemistry whatsoever. Probably a little of both.
On the other hand, I especially adore the love story between Won's sister Choi Woo Young and the officer Lee Jung Hwan. They are really adorable together and their scenes are the highlights of the drama for me. It helps that the actors portraying the characters have great chemistry and I really hope Kang Byul and Song Jong Ho would eventually find their way into portraying the lead characters in another drama, preferably with each other.
