SYNOPSIS
This is a story of four women, and their challenges in their professional lives and personal lives...
Takigawa Yukiko loves being girly and fashionable. She has turned 29 years old, but she still dresses up as she did when she was much younger. Yukiko was given a very important assignment at work, and she's desperate to prove that she can do the job well.
Takeda Seiko is 34 years old, and she's married to Takeda Hiroki but they have no children. She is working at a major real estate company, and she earns more money than her husband. Seiko has just been promoted at work, and she has to deal with bitter subordinate Imai Tetsuo.
Kosaka Yoko is 34 years old, and she works at a stationary company. As she trains the new employee Wada Shintaro, she falls in love with him as she gets to know him. However, Yoko is hesitant to do anything about her feelings because Shintaro is just 22 years old and they have a 12-year age gap.
Hirai Takako is 36 years old, and a single mother to her adorable son Hirai Yuhei. She works hard to provide everything that Yuhei needs, but she sometimes has issues becoming both a mother figure and a father figure to her son.
REVIEW
Girl is an interesting movie about women and their struggles in life; their troubles as they grow older, their challenges at work as they ascend the corporate ladder, their anxiety as they engage in romantic relationships, and their struggles to be a good mother as they raise their children alone.
I think it was fascinating how the characters in the movie are portrayed as successful in some ways or happy in some aspects of their lives, but at the same time they are also lacking in some ways or they are failing in some areas of their lives.
It is truly rare that a person will have everything. For most people, whatever their station in life or whatever their current situation, they will certainly face some challenges or they will have to deal with some issues.
Takeda Seiko: Being all worldly when talking about other people's situation, but not doing anything about your own matters.
Hirai Takako: If you don't change your thinking, your situation will never change.
Takeda Seiko: What should I change? It's my freedom how I want to spend my life.
Kosaka Yoko: Your life is not your own anymore, because you're married.
Takigawa Yukiko: It struck me that a woman's life isn't easy. A man's life is addition, while a woman's life is subtraction.
Takigawa Yukiko: Contrarily, we have less freedom when we have more choices. No matter what was chosen, it feels like there's always a better option elsewhere... Even then, we need to walk down our own path.
Takeda Seiko: Just give it a shot first. If it still fails, at least you've tried.
Mitsuyama Harumi: I also know that I'm not a girl anymore. But since God made us female, we might as well have fun in the meantime.
Takigawa Yukiko: There are also boundaries, to a woman, that cannot be overstepped. If we continue to give in, we will question our choice for the rest of our lives. That's why we will eventually give our all. That's our way of battle.
