Gong Xi practically grew up in her childhood friend Shiong Kai Long 's house, whose family owns and manages a traditional Japanese style hot springs inn.

When Kai Long went to Taipei to pursue his dreams and debuted as musician Bo Pu Shang, Gong Xi went with him to support him financially and emotionally.

However, Gong Xi overheard her friend, whom she fondly calls Shang, saying that the only reason he wanted Gong Xi to be with him is so that he has his own personal maid. He also insulted Gong Xi's very existence and belittled her sacrifice for his sake.

Hurt and angry, Gong Xi vows revenge against Shang. She plans to enter the entertainment industry and she intends to be an even more successful artist than Shang so that she can put him in his place.

REVIEW
이동해 Lee Dong Hae - 這是愛 Zhè Shì Ài (This is Love)
Skip Beat! could have been an interesting look at the glamorous entertainment industry, particularly about finding aspiring artists and training future international stars. It attempted to give a behind-the-scenes view, except what was shown in the drama is somewhat unsubstantial.

It was based on a manga, and I think it is fairly faithful to the source, but that's the reason I wasn't quite feeling the drama as a whole. It is not necessary to religiously follow the original, and it is more important to retain its essence or heart.

While an atypical plot and bizarre characters are the norm with manga, it is usually necessary to ensure that adjustments are made to downplay its outrageous aspects and to emphasize the characters' emotions when making adaptations. Unfortunately, Skip Beat! did the exact opposite.

To be fair, I never really got around to understanding Gong Xi as a character, because it doesn't really make a lot of sense for me that she willingly made another person more important than her. Why is she willing to make herself seem insignificant relative to her childhood friend when she matters just as much in general, and for her personally, she should matter so much more?

I also don't get why she feels betrayed by musician Bu Po Shang when it was her choice to make Shang her everything. Moreover, I can't believe she's even allowing Shang to influence her future when she decided to become an artist just so she can get revenge.

I don't know why Gong Xi feels sad that no one cares about her, and by no one she means other people, when she should be devastated that she doesn't love herself enough nor care for herself enough. I think that's the greatest lesson Gong Xi should learn; that she should love herself first and foremost.
