REVIEW
The Phantom of the Opera (Soundtrack) - Masquerade
The Phantom of the Opera (Soundtrack) - The Phantom of the Opera
I have read the novel The Phantom of the Opera, originally Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, by Gaston Leroux and I'm really glad that the movie adaptation remained true to the novel. In other adaptations, it seemed that the phantom Erik and Christine Daaé are in love with each other but theirs was a love that can never be so the phantom let her go and Christine got together with Raoul, Viscount de Chagny.

I don't think Christine has any romantic feelings for the phantom because the phantom taught her how to sing and she thinks her teacher is the 'Angel of Music', a manifestation of her dead father. I don't think it's normal for someone to consider a person she likes romantically as a father-figure, much less a manifestation of her father's spirit.

I feel really bad for the phantom because he was at the mercy of corrupt people when he was young. Having a disfigured face was not something he wanted and it's something he probably hates about himself so it's really sad that he is judged harshly and called a 'devil spawn' by society for something he has no control over. When he was told to show compassion, the phantom retorted, "The world showed no compassion to me".

However, I don't think his pitiful history gives him license to exercise complete control over other people, particularly Christine and the opera company. He was a musical genius and it's disappointing to see such rare talent go to waste because he was consumed by his obsession and passion.

I didn't know that Gerard Butler could sing very well so I was pleasantly surprised. I also really like the voices of Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson so I really enjoyed the musical numbers.

The movie was set in 1870 at an opera house so the characters have elaborate costumes and intricate hairstyles. My own favorite costume is when Christine was singing Think of Me, where she was wearing a white diaphanous dress with a billowing skirt and her hair had diamond star-bursts all over it.
